Friends of Cardiff Reservoirs – Newsletter No. 3, July 2023
This newsletter coincides with exciting news that the reservoirs will be opening to the public on the 28th of this month. It’s been a long time coming but the site and new visitor centre look great. There’s been a lot of progress since our last newsletter in March and Friends’ volunteers have played an important role in preparing the site.
Welsh Water have a new website – full of information about the attractions at the reservoirs and how to book onto activities: https://lisvane-llanishen.com/. They have also launched a series of social media accounts.
Annual General Meeting
Your Committee is very grateful to the more than 50 members who joined us for our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 12 July at Cyncoed Methodist Church.
At the meeting Peter Fullerton and Fiona Liddell were confirmed in the vacant Chair and Secretary posts respectively (both unopposed in the ballot). Rajeev Sharma was elected in the ballot to fill the remaining committee post and has been welcomed onto the Committee. Following the meeting, Ros Reilly was co-opted onto the committee. We are very grateful to all the members who put themselves forward for election.
During the meeting, Peter Fullerton provided a review of the year’s activities. He remembered our former Chair, Paul Davies’ contribution to the Friends group, spoke about the volunteers who had contributed over 950 hours of effort to preparing the site for public opening and thanked the Reservoir Action Group for their 20 year campaign to save the reservoirs and then help establish the Friends group two years ago. A full version of the report is appended to the AGM minutes on our website: https://www.friendsofcardiffreservoirs.org/documents/
The formal meeting was followed by a presentation from Sally Walters from Welsh Water who set out the plans for the Reservoirs opening, the visitor attractions on offer and responded to members’ questions.
Friends’ membership
We now have over 250 members. Details of how to join the Friends group are on the Membership section of our website and costs just £5 per year (or £10 for a household). We are keen to include more members on our Working Groups, so please contact us if you would like to help. Anyone with IT, marketing and/or communications skills would be particularly welcome (to support our website, social media and Welsh language communications).
Volunteering
Dozens of volunteering opportunities have been offered in collaboration with Welsh Water over the past year. A new set of opportunities was advertised to members on 14 July. All the available places were snapped up on the day, so we’ll be working with Welsh Water to offer more in the near future.
How to book on volunteering activities
We will email members directly about volunteering opportunities as they arise. These will also appear on the volunteer management system (Team Kinetic). The best way to book onto these opportunities is by logging on to the system (Login Page (teamkinetic.co.uk).
Please email membership@friendsofcardiffreservoirs.org if you wish to enrol on Team Kinetic for the first time.
